Arcesilaus (Ἀρκεσίλαος) (316-241 BC) was a Greek philosopher and founder of the New, or even Middle, Academy—the skeptical phase.

Natural at Pitane within Aeolia, he was trained by Autolycus the mathematician and later at Athens by Theophrastus and Crantor, by whom he was led to join the Academy. He later on became intimate by owning Polemon and Crates, whom he succeeded as head of the school (σχολαρχ).

Diogenes Laertius says that similarly to his successor Lacydes, he died of excessive drinking, however a testimony of others (e.g. Cleanthes) & his stand precepts discredit a story, and he is known to have been lot respected per Athenians. His philosophical system, which must exist as gathered from either a writings of others (Cicero, Academica 1. Twelve, iv. Two dozen; De Oratorio trine. Eighteen; Diogenes Laertius iv. Twenty-eight; Adv. Mathematics. septenary. 150, Pyrrh. Hyp. we. 233; Sextus Empiricus Against a Logistician), present an attack on the Stoic notion of φαντασια καταληπτιχη (manifest presentation, or verifiable feel-impression) when self-warranting criterion of truth & come according to a sceptical element latent in the later writings of Plato.

He held that nature and severity of rational conviction just can't exist as repute valid, up to these are characteristic equally of contradictory convictions. A uncertainty of sensible information applies equally to the conclusions of understanding, & so human must exist as content by owning probability which is sufficient as a practical remedy. "We know nothing, not even our ignorance"; so a caring human have had to become content using an agnostic attitude. He processed apply of the socratic method of instruction & left there are no writings. His arguments were marked by incisive humour & fertility of ideas.
